State records disposition files, 1927-1984.

From 1945 to 1955 public records with "no significance, importance, or value" could be destroyed "upon the advice and recommendation" of the record custodian and the "advice, recommendation, and consent" of the Director of the Department of Archives and History (Ala. Acts, 293, p. 486, 1945). In 1955 the State Records Commission was created and authorized to oversee the disposition of public records (Ala. Acts, 565, p. 1226, 1955). This series is composed of records that document the destruction of public records. Included in the files are memoranda noting the destruction of records that were stored in the archives, and correspondence from different state agencies authorizing the ADAH to destroy records or notifying the archives that the agency had destroyed some records. A large portion of the series consists of lists of Dept. of Revenue records that were destroyed after being microfilmed. Correspondence from the Attorney General's office concerning the authority of the ADAH Director over the disposition of public records is also included.
